ABOUT OUR SOUND

Coastal States is an indie punk band with heavy 90s influences, rooted in raw lo-fi noise and a deep reverence for genre-bending soundscapes. What began as a DIY noise project by Sai Linah in Baltimore took shape in 1994 when he met best friend and longtime collaborator Derek Jester. The two began playing shows across the Midwest and West Coast, blending gritty punk ethos with textured shoegaze and raw metal elements.

Their sound draws influence from iconic artists like Built to Spill, My Bloody Valentine, Nirvana, and second-wave black metal acts like Darkthrone, forging a sonic identity that is both nostalgic and aggressively forward-thinking.
